First you steal our content (yes, I know it's technically not stealing, but that's how it feels), anmd now you want our help in fixing?
I'm sorry you feel that way, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
Except nobody ever reads import comments. If you want to give us proper credit, add a banner at the top of each page where you copied the content from.
I gave you guys credit all over the place despite the fact that I fully fulfilled any legal obligation I had. I actually went above and beyond to make sure I gave credit were it was due, and did so fairly. I do not understand why you seem angry.
I don't believe for a second that you didn't plan any of this before your holiday.
It was never planned; Even my own wiki catalogs the chronology of the events so the proof this was unplanned is right there, public, right on the talk page for the MainPage. It wasn't even my idea, it was one of my users from Reddit who listed the sites that were options, including this one. Read it yourself.
When you ask questions like the one you did, you can expect a few weeks to pass before you get an answer. You could have easily dropped the question a few weeks before your holiday, and have a reply now. Instead, you dump the question, and when it looks like we don't give you permission you just copy it anyway.
Its a national holiday; Its not "my holiday". I'm not important enough that people will get a day of from work off because of me. Is English your first language? Or is this one of these odd "what side of the pond are you from" issues where the word "holiday" means multiple things? If so, I'm assuming you think "holiday" means "vacation" and no that's not what I meant. Once again you do not understand me at all. Its a federal holiday today, not a vacation. I'm not on vacation, and I think you are mad for no reason if you clearly misunderstood me so badly.
Also, nobody I know would wait weeks when the guy I need to talk to already responded with a response that basically said "meh, I see your request but don't care enough to respond, but lets keep the guy waiting".
If you want to have a good start, delete everything that you copied, and get proper permission first.
However, I doubt you are interested in good relations with your neighbours.
Does the word "neighbours" mean the person living next to you like it does to me? In my spell-check its actually a misspelling of neighbors.
Technically, you didn't do anything wrong and all the stuff like licenses are correct. But I believe we both agree, that game development communities like us should be at least polite enough to discuss the matter at hand.
THANK YOU. You just confirmed to me that there is at least one rational, non-overly emotional person on this forum. I'm so glad you are here,.
I would have LOVED to talk about the matter at hand, but the guy I wanted to talk to told us all basically that he saw my request to talk and didn't feel I was important enough to talk to outside of telling me he wants to get to a bigger keyboard. I was basically brushed aside despite my - at the time - very sincere and honest desire to facilitate honest and civil communication/negotiation.
After being treated so rudely I didn't have a choice but to look at my other options.
Lets be honest, at first nobody really said you can't get the backup, we were just being cautious (being such a small community) but it all depended on the admin which did inform you that he is absent now, but he is considering cooperations (he didn't say "NO"...).
I agree I was not told "No", however I was basically told to go away because I was not important. I was belittled, insulted, and worse. All things considered, I think I was - and remain - very respectful to you all. And for the record you all seem to want a lot out of me for people who have treated me badly; Its a good thing I have a thick skin.
But the second you decided to fork the wiki out of the blue you stamped yourself with a big red sign saying that you don't care at all, you just want our content for free and you consider yourself being polite because you "asked and didn't just take it". Thats not how we roll, this is a very tolerable community in general, and you would probably get your copy of the wiki as soon as possible. But what you did just seem a little selfish.
Oh course I wanted the content for free, that's why I asked for it. But even though its under an open source licence and I had no legal obligation to do so, I would have been willing to pay you a few bucks for it if I had been treated like a human being instead of a- and please correct me if this is not the proper British slang to use to describe how I feel you have been treating me - bloody git.
Maybe we all started on the wrong foot, so i guess keep the forked wiki until Codehead has the time to respond to your request and then please tolerate whatever decision he will make.
I'm more than willing to wait this out and see what he wants to say on the matter, why else do you all think I keep returning here to weather this abuse for trying to do the right thing?
Nobody 'forced' you to rush something i don't think. From my point of view you simply got impatient and went ahead with your agenda, without getting consent of anyone. Honestly i couldn't tell you're trying to be respectful. I see that you added links to the original articles, but that's the very least you should do. It is favorable that you're showing good will and even mention us on your mainpage, even if that sentence doesn't make a lot of sense.
Considering that we all seem to have our own versions of English, I highly suggest that could be the source for a lot of our troubles.
Please be careful of your wording. You're implying we're a lazy bunch that cannot keep up to your productivity, i don't think this was your intention either.
I would never say such a terrible thing, and that was NOT the intended communication.
As a final note:
Please be aware that this wiki and the forums is a special place to a lot of us. Many of us are using it since it's inception and even before then on lucky's vb site. This is more than 8 years of history, and we've been struggling a lot from losing core members and general exposure and community growth since then. But we're still a community that enjoy's contributing and helping each-other. Getting defensive towards a situation like this just natural, especially if the offender is going ahead and doing however he pleases without getting consent or discussing matters properly.
I get that, but losing core members cannot be sustainable for any community . With this fork, its a new start for the data and that means all of your time/effort lives on even if this community may be slowly dying based on what understand of what you just said. Was that what you meant to say?
Either way, I will check in for another beating either later tonight or tomorrow. If my new assumption is correct and you fine gentlemen are all in the UK or Down under, that may very well indeed explain some of the communication issues we have had. If not, well I tried to be sober for every post but I may have failed as deaths do that to you. My apologies if you still hate me for some unknown reason I have yet to fathom, but please also rest assured its not mutual if that is the case.
