I'm self-taught java programmer who's been working on games for a couple years now. I'm pretty experienced and have completed a couple full games on my own for android and pc so I know what I'm doing. However I am a bit naive when it comes to working in teams with other programmers, but that's why I'm here, to learn!

I'm just putting my name out there, if anyone has a project or knows of an open source project that could use a very prolific Java programmer shoot me an email at moe091 at gmail or post a reply here. I will work for free, It'd be very very nice to make some money but It's hard enough to find a good project that will let me code for free!(gosh am I really that unappealing?). I'm not quite to the point where I'll pay you to let me program for you yet, stay tuned though I'm getting there.

ARTISTS:

In the meantime I'll be working on my own small-scale mmo in java. It's also a pain to find hobbyist artists who wanna work on a game for free(or a percentage of the possible profits) and that's the only reason I haven't made it my main project, but if anyone is interested let me know, all I need is an artist or two and maybe another programmer and we can form a real team. I've already got it mostly planned out(plenty of room for your creative contributions left though!) and I'm just in the process of planning out the code architecture and whatnot. If we can get this going I'm willing to put a ton of work into it and see it through till the end. It will be my first real commercial game if I do it(supported by ads and some non-gamebreaking in-game purchases most likely) and we can discuss profit sharing if you are interested in joining.

I'll give you a better description if you're interested but basically the game is a permadeath mmo that takes place in some kind of hell, certain abilities and rare items persist through death making you stronger with each reincarnation. I have a pretty neat but not overly complex system that allows the game to be pretty balanced for first timers while still generously rewarding people on their 50th reincarnation. I want pvp to be big but we'll see, balancing pvp in an mmo is pretty damn hard actually, I have a few ideas for different ways to go about it where its fair and still skill-based and fun, hopefully with enough trial and tweeking we can churn out a nice pvp system. I have A LOT more detail planned out than what I just told you of course.

Once again reply here or message moe091 at gmail.

I am quite puzzled why you cannot find a Java project to work in, to be honest. Most open source projects are screaming for programmers, when you are willing to code for free, and your aim is to learn about teams, contributing to one of those projects is one way to get experience.

Yah I think I'm just to picky, I browsed sourceforge for java projects a few times and they were all really boring projects or things that where above my head, I don't have much experience in non-game programming and I'd prefer to work on a real-time graphics application. I suppose it would do me good to join a regular project and learn more about 'regular' programming though.

Any suggestions for open-source projects, or websites other than sourceforge I could try?

on a side note I feel like someone could write some simple code that could crack these new captchas, you can always find a perfect right angle of white space where the block needs to go cause they are squares, then you could just calculate which right angle each block fits in better by simulating placing it in both and checking if it continues the colors along the lines of the right angle. I did a terrible job explaining that, it's ok though I'm sure it wouldnt work anyway, I just woke up.

Have you tried checking forums like tigsource and gamedev aswell? they have quite a big community.
Another platform would be moddb/indiedb. Not sure you can filter projects by language though.

There's also http://gameifesto.com/ but it didn't launch yet. Looks quite promising though.
