I'm proud to announce Asstroidz Beta v017. Right now this may seem like an Asteroids clone, but its building to something even better! I'm just so glad its made it this far and I wanted to show off the basic functionality.

Once its done it will be selling for $4.00. Thats a pretty fair price I think. Hopefully I will sell one haha! Here are some features that the finished version will have

-Missions
-Each different ship will not only be a different color, but will have a different shape. On top of that they will have different handling, armor, and weapons capabilities.
-weapon and health power ups
-sweet background images
-interesting story
-music and sound
-and more!

Aaaany way, its hard not to sound like a salesman haha. Here is a link to the playable beta version. Keep in mind this is in a very early state.

PLEASE let me know what you think. What could be added or changed etc. I want to make sure people will want to pay 4 bucks for this. 8)

Cool game, bouncing off the asteroids is a nice touch.

I don't think you'll be able to sell asteroids though, it's been cloned a lot and is available for free from lots of places, including GPWiki, if you go look at the game programming challenge before last.

Well it wont be too big of a deal if I can't sell it. I've been bouncing between the idea of sell it or free + open source. I think if I can get this where I see it in my head maybe someone will want to buy it.

Also to anyone who gives suggestions/feedback on this, if I decide to sell it, you get a free copy! 8)

If you were developing it for the iPhone or some other mobile phone then I'd say you could probably sell it. As you're targetting the PC, I don't think you'll get very far. As igthorn said, there are a lot of asteroid clones out there, along with a lot more sophisticated games available for free (just look at a linux distros package repository :)) and if it's your first completed game then it's normally better to just throw it out there, get feedback and improve for the next game, etc :)

Interesting... The comments I've gotten here seem so discouraging. Games like Psychotoxic and Stolen come out (and are sold), even though they are immulating games like Metal Gear Solid, and most FPS's. Id software didn't start by giving away their first game, they made it shareware. 4$ for what this is planned to be, with a demo version available is not all that bad IMHO. Any way, nobody's gonna get me down, so I'm still working on this. Here's the latest greatest...

Asteroids can't be compared to an FPS.

This isn't the 80s and 90s however. :)

You possibly could get some people to buy the game, but you won't get the same sort of quality feedback and learning as simply throwing it out for free (with source) and asking what people think of it.

Machaira:
I wasn't comparing asteroids to FPS's, I was comparing Psychotoxic to FPS's.

All:
Its sad that the quality of feedback would be lesser on a game that *might* be sold and might not. Especially when you're guaranteed a free copy if you make suggestions. I think if this turns out to be something great and it took me months of hard work, regardless if its a clone, or my first complete game (its not by the way), 4 dollars is more than a fair price to ask. Also I find that it is fair to ask for money in general.

My position on selling the things you've poured your heart into (and time) is this. Greed works 2 ways. You have A. all the tards that think EVERYTHING should be free and B. the tards who charge 80 dollars for a game just because its been ported to Linux. A. Is greedy because people need $ to survive. If we lived in a free society where rent and food was free I'd be demanding more free games and stuff too, but thats not the way it is. B. Is greedy because taking advantage of a small market, or a market of people desperate to get ahold of a good product. Either that or taking advantage of the fact that there is no competition and charging whatever they want.

Any way. You guys have *barely* talked about what you think of the game. Whats up with that? The biggest reason I created this thread was to get feedback on how I can make my game better not weather or not I should sell it.

Ok, feedback.

Standard asteroids clone. Reasonable graphics. The only thing that's different is the health meter rather than 1 hit kills, and so far that's just made the game too easy. Still unpolished around the edges. If I did buy it (which I probably wouldn't as it's an asteroids clone... can get them free in a lot of different forms from thousands of places) I probably wouldn't think of it as value for money and that would discourage me from throwing more money at future games.

I think that once it's finished you should sell it. If the final product matches your vision and it seems fun in your head then there's almost certainly someone out there who would share your view strongly enough to throw $4 dollars at it. Personally I wouldn't buy it at the current stage just because I've played a lot of asteroid type of games over time and had to program an asteroids clone for my uni course last year.

If you wanted me to buy it, you would have to add something new and exciting to it that hooks me and pulls me in. I would possibly spend $4 if it had a story that equalled the quality of the novels that I read. In terms of gameplay, it would be cool if you added some features like a scrolling map or some new kinds of asteroids and weapons to turn it into more of a real time puzzle game of matching weapons and strategy to the asteroids which are threatening you.

I don't think there's any advantage to releasing your source code, I doubt anyone will read through it and give you advice and there's no other benefit. Same goes for releasing it for free, if people want free Asteroids then there are plenty of them out there. So put something fresh in and make it worth $4
