Hey guys,

I might be moving GPWiki over to a new server soon. If that does indeed happen, do you have any requests for upgrades or changes to the software? (I know many people want the latest mediawiki, for example.)

Please let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Awesome news Ryan.

phpBB3 would be my wish (as long as we can re-jig the anti spam mods), along with MediaWiki's latest stable release.

Fix the "Post a reply" page so that the textbox works in Google Chrome (It currently has weird rendering issues).

Looks a bit like Utah if you ask me.

Requests? Hmmm.... I'm thinking Nutella.

So phpBB3 is the only request?

Codey: What features does it have that you want?

Also, is it compatible with a phpBB2 database, or will we have to start fresh?

It doesn't seem to be compatible, but it does seem to be convertible:
http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/php ... phpbb3.htm

I wouldn't want to convert if we lost all the current forum content. Not only would we lose all the useful info but we would have to start the postcounts from fresh :eek I'm not a student anymore, I don't have the time to push my count up and make it look like I'm a useful member of the forum :P

I wuv my pony, you guys rock!

Anyway, ahem. :O

You can upgrade a phpBB2 DB to phpBB3 easily, keeping posts, users, etc. It's part of the install process.

As for features, the phpBB3 admin backend is much improved, allowing much better control of groups and the like. Plus nice features like pruning users over 6 months old with 0 posts, removing posts between specified times/dates (nice for dealing with Spam floods.) Mods also have a control panel for dealing with reported messages, etc.

The front end is much the same, some new bits here and there. Post reporting is handy, it'll save me having to visit the Java and VB forums. :P

The biggest reason to upgrade is that phpBB2 isn't supported any more. That means Struan's Chrome problem will never be fixed, and more importantly, it means no more security updates. This is a reasonably popular site, once a phpBB2 exploit is found, it won't be patched, leaving us vulnerable to any script kiddie that notices an old v2 install here.

Why not do a parallel phpBB3 install and let everyone test it out, see how we go?

We will need to redo the anti-spam mods. However, from what I've seen, most of the guts is pretty similar to v2.

I concur with Codey's recommendation to move to v3.

The anti-spam that comes with v3 is a fair bit improved as well.

And having found the category settings for my phpBB3 board today, I suddenly like it better :D I'd say upgrade. You may need to redo the theme though.

I would like the newest phpBB as well. Considering this is a default theme I don't think many will care if we just use the new default theme.

Ok, phpBB3 it is, then.

Nobody is interested in the latest mediawiki? It might be more of a pain for me to upgrade, since I haven't upgraded the wiki in ages.

Latest MediaWiki would be great, mainly to get rid of the problems that we ran into last time we started looking at anti-spam, etc.

However, I wouldn't want to cause you too much work. :O
