I've been working on a Mini Chess game and would be happy to hear feedback from anyone who wants to try it out.

Just point your phone at http://www.monkeycities.net/wap/java and download it.

It'll try and scale to your screen size, but to be honest there isn't much point playing it on a really small screen. 240x320 works best, down to 128x160 which is almost playable but is ugly as sin and difficult to hit the right squares.

Its a 'demo' but there is no full version yet, I have some plans for what that will entail when I get time to work on it (stupid customers >:()

This version of MiniChess is played on a 6x6 board with no queens at the start (you can get queens through pawn promotion) and the following limitations on the rules:

* No pawn double move at start and therefore no enpassant
* No Castling
* No underpromotion.

I'm hoping that 6x6 chess has short games that are interesting enough for people that don't want to suffer through a full length game (i.e., something you can play between stops on the train or whatever).

I guess there is the risk that people who like chess don't like it cut down and people that don't like chess aren't going to like chess variants. But we'll see how it goes.

In any case its an interesting / mind bending / headache inducing exercise in AI programming, something I've next to none of in the past.

Cheers,
Nick

I've updated it so it plays a bit faster and saves your win / loss / draw record.
