Hah, I can't IRC because my school blocked it off. You know, to stop 'viruses and worms.'

Which do you think will happen first? Johnny Nonothings will stop downloading everything imaginable, using mIRC, no less; or, the techs block the default ports and put a 30.06 in the bean of anyone who tries to get around it.

The latter is not only easier, but a lot more fun.

Easiest way to get past most firewalls (like for irc'ing) is to set up a Linux box with SSH. Then just ssh into your machine and IRC from there. Of course this only works if they don't block SSH, but you might even be able to get around that by running it on another popular port (21, 80, 443).

You can also use SSH tunnels to tunnel any sort of connection through your home machine, allowing you to use local apps (like mirc). SSH also has the advantage that the school can't monitor you (unless they use keyboard loggers).

Could also setup a computer to accept connections on port 80, and send them out on another port, like 6667.

Yep, that's essentially what an SSH tunnel is, except an SSH is encrypted from you to the relay point (but not from the relay to the target machine).

So what's a good IRC client for Windows? Are there any that won't allow l33t script-kiddies to fill my HD with junk and lose all my work on AMBER?

I prefer mIRC, with Noname script.

I hate any script that shows colours on disconnect. In some of the channels it actually results in bans. (Some people do not realize that all kinds of skins make red blue or other colors..)

I like QUiRC. It's long-gone abandonware, and the last version I couldn't rediscover, just a few iterations back, but I love it. No graphical masturbation, no magical bullshit; just text chat with GUI for server selection and window switching.

It's beautiful.

It also can work as a server, so you can quickly set up little IRC networks on LANs and be 90's-cool.

Bleh. Vanilla mIRC all the way. (That is, no pre-made scripts, incase you don't know the expression.)

Whenever I'm on Windows I just use vanilla mIRC, as well. Scripts are pretty useless for the most part, if you ask me.

Myself, last few times I had to use IRC, I used the IRC client that you can get as an add-in for firefox. Chatzilla, I think it is.

Now I can just put irc://(url) in my address bar and it fires it up and connects 8)

I dont recall if it supports that whole jury-rigged file-transfer-over-irc setup that MIRC and some of the others do. DCC or whatever it was called (been ages since i've touched that).
