Hello fellow gpwikiers :D

I thought i never make it to this page. Guess you never know :p

Image

Summary:
Into Beyond is a space exploration shoot em up. You navigate between different star systems and travel to planets trying to fulfill your objectives (blowing massive stuff up). Additionally, you can venture around different locations and find loot, new upgrades, or complete side missions.

http://redwatergames.blogspot.com/

A bit of technical info:
The game is written in C# and opengl (through opentk) mostly using the custom engine that is in development for around one and a half years. I've spent a few weeks implementing the basics, like the scene graph, vector stuff etc. and from that point on only doing on demand feature implementations to have a fluid development and not get stuck on features i won't even need.

The game itself is in development since early october, initially for the ludumdare october challange, but i've seen it unfit as entry, as it is mainly unfinished. It currently has a planet editor, which only crudely works, which is why i have no footage of it, and basic gameplay mechanics. I've spent some time rewriting and tweaking the controls and implementing new features and enemies.

The next version will include more gameplay content (enemy variety, weapons, and actual mission objectives, in favor of random positioned enemies ;) )and is due end of december.

I was applying for the 8bit funding and yesterday the project got approved.
http://8bitfunding.com/project_details.php?p_id=257
If you're into shmups, and like explorations and space and blowing things up, i'd love your support :rock

I know this looks really crappy right now, but as i mentioned, it is only a months job, and i have no artist available currently, so programmer arts will be all over the place >:D

Thanks for reading \o

Looks cool man! Is the terrain all randomly generated?

Thanks :D

nah, the terrain is pulled out, or dragged in with an editor basically like this.

Although it is easily possible to read the heighmap from one or several noise textures, but i think planets would probably look more interesting if being designed by hand (i'm not discriminating nature! :p)

for the planetary parts i want to add foliage, trees, cities and caves to make it appear more alive and versatile. There is still a lot to do in terms of appearance.

I was drawing some concept mockups earlier today so you can see in what direction this is going, and in what kind of scale i want to develop this game.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12237727/Spacehunter/concepts/concepts.html

These are just 3 potential designs, and i have another few in mind. But implementing just those three will be difficult enough :)

Also keep in mind that i am no artist whatsoever :P

Looks very cool. I'd like to do a featured image, but it'll have to wait till I'm back in front of a decent computer.

Don't think so. You could put an [img] inside an [url] and then point to a higher res pic with the url.

If you're referring to the screenshot I posted - I have no idea. Just got a random image off of img.ie to illustrate how to post a thumbnail with a link to the larger image.

Was quite the day to get the water fog to work (to actually only draw it under the watersurface).
I'm glad this is finally fixed.
Framebuffer objects, shaders, errors, bugs... my brain is bleeding

Into Beyond looks like an awesome game-to-be. How much will it cost?

Thanks :)

pricetag i'm aiming for is around 5-10 bucks, depending on if i have to cut back on content or quality for the sake of releasing at all.

You'd really help if you could spare a buck or two ;)

I'll try, but my funds are pretty limited. I'm assuming that the ship models and such are placeholders?
I really like the whole 'revolving around planet shooting' system. Its been done before, but rarely.
Is there going to be any customization for the players ship? Can you land on planets?! :yeah

Anyway, looks really fun. Just one thing... WTF is that icon? It looks like a red tentacle or something.

Yeah all models are placeholders. I have a friend who has decent modeling skills, but i don't have an artist for concepts so theres no progress on the artsy side unfortunately :/

i've seen a few. i thought its a genuine idea, until i've seen 2 games that implemented this basic idea in the 80ies. 2D obviously. but man, that was a surprise.

Ships customization will happen. Not in appearance, but you can change weapons and supportive equipment/upgrades mainly used for exploration (pressure compensation for deep sea exploration, heat shields for hotter planets like venus at some 500degrees) but also countermeasures against heat seeking missles. stuff like that, you get the drill :)

Can you land on planets?!

oh why you! yes i really considered this, and still am. this is highly dependant on the success of this game. if i can afford it, it will go in. not directly walking on the planet's surface, but more interiors, infiltrating enemy bases.

That icon top left? its supposed to be your ship within a circle, and stands for countermeasures (creates an area around you for a short duration that makes missles explode) also, its flipped. :P

i will try to get a new video out tomorrow. i hope it doesn't take all day

That would be awesome. For me it would be one of the defining reasons of buying a game (I'm weird :geek), and its always great to have multi-vehicles: i.e. walking around in bases and flying your ship.

I'm also assuming you can't land on Jupiter XD
