One of the ideas that I had to try to bring a bit of life back to GPWiki was to start an Image of the Day (IOTD) feature.

Way back when Flipcode was still running, I used to visit every day to see the cool stuff that people were doing.

Examples
http://www.flipcode.com/archives/03-02-2005_fate.shtml
http://www.flipcode.com/archives/02-04-2005_b.shtml
http://www.flipcode.com/archives/01-31-2005_pb.shtml

The IOTD provides a showcase for your projects, and gives people a reason to visit the site more regularly.

I've started to build a subsite for IOTD HERE. Just a rough and ready, static html based site at the moment, but if it works out, I'll look into coding up an automated PHP version.

So, PM me any screenshots you want to submit for the IOTD and we'll start the ball rolling.

Excellent idea!
It might be kinda hard to find something new every day to begin with, but if all goes well, new users will come and want to show their stuff to the world.

I hope to have something to show soon...

It doesn't have to be changed everyday, Flipcode used to be updated about once every 3 days, sometimes it went weeks without an update.

It's just 'Image of the unspecified time period' doesn't have the same ring to it. ;)

I like the idea, but the current problem still persists.

The community has what, 10 - 15 active members?
Before this thing can work the members will have to make some games, or just game previews. We can't expect someone to come over here, register and just want to show off their game. It doesn't work quite like that, since I have noticed that most new people join only to seek help. There are exceptions...

So yea, I like the idea, but in order to get this thing going, the community needs members who are building games.

Other than that... I am interested in publishing screenshots of my game :P maby in a month. It's good on track, really. All it needs is AI, a few finishing touches and have the story implanted. Then ofcourse the dreaded art :x

So hopefully I will pm you some screenshots soon.

Point taken, getting enough content will be a problem. It doesn't have to be full blown games though, some of the most interesting images over at Flipcode were small demos, tests, proof of concepts or just plain hacks. Looking forward to seing your screenshots Zappy.

I'd like the ITOD (or IOTUTP :P ) to be open to anyone. At the moment I'm only taking PMs, which restricts it to forums members, but I'm looking at knocking up submission page that anyone will be able to use. I'm sure that a bit of free publicity will be enough to get some submissions. The IOTD will link to the forum for comments and that'll hopefully drag some new blood onto the site.

You could grab some screenshots from the best submissions to the Coding Challenges. That could get things started.

Would this appear on the frontpage?

Nice idea Igthorn 8), I've been trawling back through the Announcements forum for material too.

I'm not sure about placement for the IoTD, I thought about using the Wiki, maybe even frontpaging it, but I don't want to dilute the current site layout too much.

Just now I'm fighting with PHP/MySQL to automate the subsite. Once I've had a fiddle with that, I'll see how it fits with the rest of the site.

Great feedback though guys, keep it coming.

I'd be in favour of a proper front page, with site name/logo, links to both the forums and the wiki, and the IOTD.

Hm, does this forum support uploads (per forum possibly?) Then it could be done using such a way, instead of having to code a separate system :). Just taking the latest thread in a sub forum, and it allows for some discussion too :)

That's a possibility too. I think it would be better as a subsite though, rather than just another thread buried in the forum.
I'm looking at CMS packages like WordPress or Drupal. WordPress is very easy to maintain and can tie into phpBB for logins. 8)

I like Jasmine's idea of an opening 'hub' page, but the way that the site is currently configured could cause problems there.

That would certainly be useful.

Can Wordpress handle uploading images to the gpwiki.org servers?

Wordpress does support image uploads, I'm not sure how they are stored though. I'd rather have an image folder than a heap of binary blobs in the DB.

The first submission is up!

http://www.gpwiki.org/iotd/

I've started building a PHP solution for the IoTD (if nothing else it's blowing the cobwebs off my scripting skills), will look at WordPress and other options in the New Year.

Cool. Nicely done!

If the image of the day were already a forum post, it would solve the commenting problem.

I think it is possible to make a new board which can only have topics created by Administrators, but all users can post in. Then you could link a smaller version of the image onto the front page, with a link to the forum post.

That's a pretty good idea. I'll look into that too.
