I've finally gotten Tankz to the point where I can show a brief video of it. The game is severely lacking in polish and content, but the core mechanics are there.

Have a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jkdq5yJTelM

I suck at making videos, so bare with me. Probably best to watch it in 720p/1080p too.

I also forgot to mention in the video some of the more subtle effects such as the recoil on the weapons and the screenshake on the explosions. Also the cannon doesnt draw much power from the capacitor, but there is a visible draw. Also, different weapons make different sized/shaped holes in armor. Oops.

Looks very nice. Love the explosion effects. Are the keyboard controls complex? I hear a lot of rattling keys in the audio.

Thanks!

No, the controls aren't bad... I'm just an erratic driver lol

AWSD controls tank movement, arrow keys move the turret, spacebar shoots. I guess my mic was a little too sensitive as well.

Nice to see your game running. Would be cool if there was a visual indication of the hull damage on enemy tanks so you could try and concentrate your fire on the weak side.

Funny you mention that, I've been thinking about a "Tactical Scanner" subsystem that would do exactly that.

niiiice.
When you mentioned twinstick shooter something hit me. would be funny to use the left thumbstick for the left side chain, and the other for the right side, control it like an actual tank, somewhat. you can still use the left/right motion for turret adjusting. this might be horrible and bad from the gameplay perspective, but sure sounds fun to try :D
apart from that, i'm not really sold on the movement physics of the tanks. they move and turn without resistance and weight. i'd love to see different moving behaviors based on the chasis or something :)

good work mate

Agreed! I'm planning on having different movement speeds, rotation speeds, armor values and subsystem capacities for each chassis. Also, I'd like to put in "speeding up" and "slowing down" for movment and possibly rotation to give a more natural feel. That may involve some at-run-time sound distortion, which I'l need to look into.

Interesting idea with the 2 tank treads, would be a neat challenge to try and work that into the control scheme.
