Hey, I'm a bit of a game writing vet, and I have one main piece of sage advice for you. Start smaller than that. Runescape was not built in a day, and it was not built by noobs, write some fun clones and maybe some small online games. I don't know what tools you will need, but none of them are going to be as important as experience. I hope I'm not sounding pessimistic, but I've been coding games for a couple years (as high school studies) and although I've done some awesome stuff, I don't think even the originators of Runscape made the game we know today until they had a few years of experience.

It's pretty common for people to want to make there own MMORPG, but they are extremely complicated and will DEFINANTLY take years of skill. If when you say you haven't written games before you mean you haven't coded at all, then you are definantly going in over your head. If you have any specific questions I and the other members of this forum can help, but this is very general and it doesn't sound like you are prepared properly.

I started with a book called head first java. It's my favorite but their are others too, there are many good books in book stores and a few good online resources two, like the java tutorials on the java website.

http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutor ... index.html <----java tutorials: getting started

Just don't go looking in a library, they only have old books and that just wont do for Java, since it's a fairly new language (in it's current version). Pretty much no matter what book or tutorial you start with they'll have you writing command line applications first, and they wont do much of anything either. Stick with it though, and you really might make that game of yours :thumbs

There is some good information on the wiki here that may help you out.

How do I get Started - very general overview of the whole development process.
Beginner FAQ - you might already know all the stuff here, but it gives some more general information.
Java Tutorials - a bunch of tutorials to walk you through various aspects of programming in Java.

Lastly, you should download the Java documentation. There's an online version of it here. The docs are indispensable, you'll find yourself looking up how methods work, what objects are available and there are even some nice explanations of things, like regular expressions, etc..

LOL! REALLY? That's like a fancy rtfm but more of a dtfm! LOL! Terrible, terrible way to learn, impossible advice. The Java docs are essential, but completely available online so there's no need to download it.

I'd recommend a big "complete reference" type of Java book for the details, and another beginner type of book. I could recommend one but it would be self serving. ;)

Looking at it, it seems like your average general purpose Java programming tutorial.
Where is the "game" part?

Not saying it is not useful, (you might want to add it to the wiki), but for game programming?
