A guest has made a few "thanks for the info" posts in C/C++ forum. The only purpose is to show off the signature about those bloody boots.
Also user webuggshoe in java forum.

U** is the new language to replace C++. This is a prototype based language in which classes are not present. It instead uses something called Boots to encapsulate data needed to create dynamic bindings, that in turn achieve delegation. A lot of people struggle to migrate to U** Boots :P

Why would you want to? Class-based programming is intuitive. Why make things harder for yourself?!?

For the same reason people choose C over C++. Some people just love a challenge. Just you wait, U** Boots is gonna be huge. ;)

How would you even pronounce U**
you-asterisk-asterisk?
you-star-star?
Either way, sounds... lame, pronunciation wise.

you-star-star

U is chosen because it looks like a C on it's side.

The metaphor is 'to see things from a different point of view'. :yeah

Can't we just not allow guest posts for a couple of months. It's not like it's frequently used as most people who come here will register, and with most forums/bbss, you have to anyway.

If we make it more of a hassle to register with unique emails addresses etc, the forums will be spammed much less.

We basically never get spam on the forum. If someone wants to spam us they can just make an account. Most spammers don't even realize that guests can post without registering.

Using the same logic less genuine guests would post :(

Are you the spammer? ;)

But it's not really transferrable logic, because nobody really minds registering, and a genuine poster wouldn't get their account locked. :)

From a spammers pov, the repetitive process of registering new accounts, having them repeatedly locked, and then having to set up a new email address to register a new account would be a daily pita, and be big deterrent to the spammer.

After all, genuine guest posters rarely post. Sometimes a month can pass without one. To ask them to register if they want to post here over the next couple of months, would be no big deal. By that time the spammer has moved on. It would be only a temporary situation.

I beg to differ. I posted as a guest for months after this site was started, because I couldn't be bothered. If I get logged out, I am usually lazy about logging back in and just stop posting for a while.

Uh... yeah... I think most of the spam is automated.

Maybe we just need a harder-to-guess captcha for guests?

I don't think the catpcha is the problem. If physical people - not machines - are the ones spamming us there's nothing we can do about it.

We don't have a way to know for sure, but I would wager it is automated. There is no way to stop a human spammer, but automated spammers are getting smarter. There are open-source bots floating around targeted to certain content management systems, including MediaWiki and phpBB. They also have pattern-recognition algorithms to (sometimes) circumvent things like simple captchas.

The best way to stop the spamming is to just disallow accounts/posting for everyone... but I think we can all agree that isn't a solution. So, as long as we have a forum, we have to rely on the vigilance of our moderation team.
