I have a sneaking suspicion that using the wikipedia logo would be some kind of trademark infringement.

We'd also quite like to ensure that the 'G' logo is in there somewhere... my proposed concept was similar to the original concept, the G logo with a crane, but with Lil' Endian in a hard hat next to it.

Scaffolding! The problem with the crane idea is that it's not contained and dense enough. This kind of logo works best if it's all in one little spot, not a big scene spread out horizontally. So just get the G, possibly an unfinished G, with areas of framing exposed, and scaffolding over it, and Lil' Endians in hard hats standing around on the scaffolding.

I actually sketched it out on paper, but my new camera sucks and wants me to install its scumware in order to extract its pictures.

Scaffolding is a good idea. It seems like a crane might make the image too large. The idea of construction or building something up seems to be a key style. Maybe have the logo broken up a little in the shape of lil' Endian and scaffolding is building it. The G would over everything. I'm having a problem picturing it though.

A bit of plagiarism here, but how about the wikipedia logo, but instead of the various greek symbols etc. on the pieces, instead alternate between the GD logo and lil' endian? Or possible have them in the 2 most obvious pieces, and then use various graphics and symbols on the other visible pieces to represent game development :)

I'm not going to attempt to do it myself though because I suck badly at artistic work :P

Yeah, I had that same idea. I even made the thing Sirisian did. But I was at work and too lazy to upload it.

Hm, is HTML support disabled or something..? I wanted to edit my profile but all the HTML tags get shown in the preview.

Or do I overlook something?

You're overlooking the presence of wiki markup. :P

I dislike Wiki markup when it comes to tables.

Well, we have to recognize, I guess, that it isn't particularly important. But I agree that there's something wrong with the people. They're too stylized, there's too much of an artist's mark in the way they're shaded and all. It doesn't help that that particular style and the colors used are more reminiscent of some kind of 90's Corel Draw clipart or something, not a 21st century Web 2.0 Wiki.

We have gone through this discussion with the assumption that the logo needs to symbolically display the collaborative construction idea. But it isn't like all the wiki's visitors are going to make an in-depth literary analysis of the logo they see. The logo is there to give a memorable and recognizable visual image of the site for association in visitor's minds, and also to impart a style, or personality, to the wiki. It would be in the wiki's interest, then, for the logo to be as cool and attractive as possible. I liked the original simple green one. But we've established that somebody else is making the decision.
