Hi guys,

One of the things I'd like to do is remove the redundancy between GDNet's books section and the wiki's books section. GDNet's is larger and has a lot more in the way of reviews, so it makes sense to move the content from the wiki into GDNet. Some of the pages were little more than the name of the book anyway, so I've already replaced those pages with direct links to the listings on GDNet (after checking with Spodi).

I'd like to try and preserve the reviews where possible - including information about the author of the review, because that's possibly a big factor when considering how much weight to give the review. The most sensible way to set up this attribute is to use the GDNet user account, as that's how all the existing reviews are attributed. The alternative would be posting the reviews using the 'anonymous poster' account, and then adding some kind of signature, but that's not as neat.

So, I'm wondering whether people who've written book reviews on the wiki could create GDNet accounts if necessary, and then let me know what their account names are? Then I'll port the reviews over and attribute them to those accounts.

I realise that not everybody's still active, and some people may not even want their reviews being migrated, but anyone who does, if you'd oblige me with an account name I'd greatly appreciate it.

Not everyone checks the content issues thread very often (I know I don't ), so you may want to consider pming the people in question to get their attention.

Of those, Codehead and Lachlan will probably be the only ones easy to find.

If this fails, couldn't you try linking to the wiki pages from the GD.net book review page? Messy, I guess, but simple, and it keeps things on the wiki.

Off topic: So this forum is still being used as the main "village pump" for the wiki?

The point is to get them off the wiki though. The books section is little more than the details of some books (title, author, ISBN, etc) and reviews; the details don't change once the book's been entered initially, and you generally don't edit somebody else's review, so what's the benefit of them being wiki pages?

Merging the small number of books with their small number of reviews into GDNet's large number of books with their large number of reviews seems sensible to me, instead of having a little bit of book information split off from the rest. It's also one less set of pages that people have to spend time cleaning spam off.

No, it's more that this is something that pertains exclusively to wiki users who are from gpwiki.org, so I thought it would be sensible to post it here. I'd figure most discussion should stay on the wiki talk pages.

I may have registered for GDNet ages ago, I can't remember. I'm not gonna register again, I already spend far too much of my day keeping up with too many message boards.

I think my review was a short one of Code Complete. A great book IMO, although probably outdated now (I know there has been a another edition since I read it). However, if you want to take the review content, feel free to do so and tag it as anon or whatever.

Just thought of something you could do for the reviews, Superpig... how about creating a 'gpwiki' user and attributing the reviews where the author doesn't have an account (or can't remember it ) to that.
It creates the link back to here for our old review content too, especially if you set this forum as the gpwiki users homepage

That's possible. It's better than using anon. Still, I'd prefer to avoid creating accounts that don't have a single clear owner; I'm also not wild about all the reviews being attributed to the same username when they were written by different people. Still, it's an option to bear in mind.

Codehead: I don't suppose you remember what your account name might have been? I can't find any accounts with an email address @codehead.co.uk. For this to work you don't actually have to be using the account, naturally - I just need to be able to find it so that I can work my magic in the database.

I have used code[UNDERSCORE]head[AT]yahoo[DOT]com and code[HYPEN]head[AT]hotmail[DOT]com in the past. Maybe one of those?
