Hi,
My career aptitude test told me that I should be a computer programmer. I already am a very good gamer so I thought it might be fun to try to make my own. I read everything and it said I should start simple. The problem is that I dont know any of the languages they were talking about. Can anyone tell me a simple language to learn so I can start my creation. Thank You in advance.

While programming can be a very fun asset to have, it takes hard work and dedication. If I were to suggest a language to start with, I'd have to go with Visual Basic. You'll need to buy a beginner's book from a store such as Barnes & Nobel or online, preferably with a compiler (on disk) included. Once you have the basics of the programming language down, you'll have the knowledge of where you need to go next. I always programmed in Visual Basic 6, and learned from the book Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 by Bradley Millspaugh. Once you have the feel for the programming language, and can take hold of the reigns, you can decide what you'd like to do from there (move on to a more powerful programming language, try and deal with Visual Basic, et cetera).

Lots of luck to 'ya,

-Daniel

I recommend C#. I'd recommend it to beginner and expert a like, game programmer or not.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/visualcsharp/

In my opinion, it is the best programming language right now and it is getting better faster than any other language. If you are interested in games you can use the XNA framework with C# to develop games for the PC and XBox360 (although unless you are a very fast learner it will probably be a while before your able to program at that level).

I don't have anything against Visual Basic 6 (Its what I learned with, well actually it was VB3-6). But its not a language you should be learning right now. VB6 pretty much has no future. Microsoft is dropping support for it. Yes, you could eventually transition to VB.NET but then you might as well just learn C# because you have to learn so much of the .NET framework, especially if you are new and don't already know VB)

Career aptitude tests are a waste of time.

Mine said I should be a roofer, along with most of my classmates. :rolleyes However Hawkey, if you are interested in coding, go for it. There are plenty of worse jobs out there.

I'd second looking into C#, but I'd also look into Ruby if you're having trouble grasping the concepts. It worked wonders for myself.
