Many have been speculating that this might happen, but following on from last week's Steam OS announcement, the Steam powered console has been confirmed.

The box is going to be beta tested very shortly, with general availability penciled in for some time in 2014.

Except it is no console. It will be a bunch of machines/pcs of differing specs, probably to aim at different price points and capabilities.
Only want remote gaming? Use the Streamerbox. Wanna play low performance indie titles? Get our Budgetbox. Wanna play the latest AAA? Get the Beefbox :P

I can imagine that games and boxes will receive a kind of performance rating, so you can instantly see what game will run on what hardware.

I like where this is going though. We'll see how it will turn out in a couple month :D

More goodness to come. This is actually quite interesting. I was thinking a lot the past few years about alternate versions of input. This might be a nice alternative. I'm looking forward to testing it!

What do you guys think of the aesthetics of the controller? I sort of like it, not too sure what everyone is thinking when they call it ugly...

I must be honest. Valve is just plain lame overrated bagel cream.

Overrated or not. they're taking some pretty big steps, and being the only devs/publishers trying to do so. I think they ought to earn some respect for that.

^This^

The industry needs a shake up. Big players like EA have enforced a 'safe' climate, release the same game year on year and ensure that blandness spreads everywhere. No-one is willing to take a risk and try anything new. The odd 'new' IP like Guitar Hero is milked to death within a couple of years and then normal blandness resumes.

I don't care if EA sucks. I rarely buy new games, but that's why I've spent so much time learning how to make them, isn't it?

It's the brainless "casual gamers" (e.g. extremely nerdy jocks in the 21st century) without any taste at all who keep buying these redundant games and give the industry its worst shape. The fact is almost everyone (young) plays video games these days, but most of them have very little experience or familiarity with what IS FUN and WHAT IS NOT FUN. lol
