Just after QuakeCon, surprisingly enough, John Carmack left Id Software
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... -oculus-vr

He joined Lucky Palmer's Oculus team as CTO so there will be greatness!
Judging by the games Id made lately it's not much of a loss. I'd imagine id-tech is pretty much in a state where it's able to produce high quality games for quite a while so he's presumably not needed as much over there anyways.

Just came here to post this. Oculus has so much going for it, interesting times ahead.

The technical leadership he provides for games in development at id Software is unaffected.

I think he's been working on voxel technology (Not Jon Olick; Carmack himself). I think they're already pulling together yet another next-gen engine just for Doom 4.

Didn't John say in his Rendering lecture that he'd given up on voxels and ray tracing for now?

Unrelated: I disagree with his remark on the complexity of methods alternative to ray tracing.

That's interesting, because I've had 1-on-1 discourse regarding his work on voxels. I really don't know what to say to that, because it's not a "hunch." It is slightly assumptive, but albeit an assumption based on first-hand information from Carmack himself regarding his research. We pinged some 'tweets' a while back; however, that was in 2012. I didn't bother to watch his full rendering lecture. Since the beginning he just outlined his naive misconceptions about light transport and so I decided to stop watching.
