Java has had a bad time with exploits recently, but being dropped from a major OS is a real warning sign. Removal of Java from the OS had been planned, but the action has been brought forward by recent security issues.

Users can still install the Java runtime directly from the Oracle website if they want it, but I will people bother if the risks are known?
