Weezl posted about this new VR headset a while back, but it's now getting close to release.

The Rift Developer kit should be available by Jan 2013 and costs $300 for U.S. customers and $350 for overseas customers.

Does look pretty good. However, it's yet another 'thing' in the growing pile of extra things I have around the house.

My Rock Band drums hardly get used, the guitars are stuffed behind the TV. Too many peripherals. :(

I also have some concerns about the eye - screen distance. I'm getting old and recently got glasses for reading, I'm pretty sure you can't wear specs under the rift, and don't know if I'd be able to focus on something so close.

What i heard about it is that you dont need to use glasses. it just works magically, or so. not sure about details, though. Well yeah, its another clunky peripheral, but it's got use in more than just one game :D

I'm still trying to save money for it, i'm so looking forward to try it.

It's got no proprietary connectors or platforms, it is open, both in hardware and software, and encourages development and tinkering to indie and commercial parties alike. Hardly that would be anything apple would come up with :P

Latest news i heard is that Hawken is going to support it. This might become a major selling point as it is being hyped quite a bit for some time. I'm looking forward to what people come up with.

Honestly, I'l wait on this one. Probably avoid the clunky 1.0 and wait for a few generations of refinement. That and I think it will be most effective at simulators and the like, and less usefull for FPS(despite the vid of the guy playing DooM3). I think for any kind of competitive/precision FPS gameplay, the Rift will not be viable; we're too used to the precision/responsiveness of the mouse.. id probably break my neck trying to compete online.

Valid points. They even said the current version is kinda s***. But even in its s***ty state it is marginally better than anything we had in that regard.

The competitive gaming scene will probably avoid this, although i could see how it might be used in rts type games, but there's a lot of games and genres that would work out very well with it. Obviously fps style games and rpg's. I cannot wait to look up to a big huge ogre that is swinging his mace at me while his drool dribbles down his chin and splashes down in front of me :D

I was just about to assume that this wont happen until Skyrim 17, but then i remembered, bethesda and id are working together, so it might come sooner than i'd expect. Looking forward to the next Fall-out installment :D
