The popular construction toy is 80 years old and The Register has a nice editorial and the anniversary movie.

The article does mention my pet peeve of modern Lego, the kits are a little too specialised with bespoke parts.

Heh, what are the odds. LEGO is 80 today, and I'm 31!

And I agree, modern LEGO is too specialized. When I was a kid I just had a box full of random sizes/colors and there was no 'theme' telling me what to do.

Yeah, I miss the days when imagination meant something as well.

Happy birthday, LEGO! And you too, GPWiki User Formerly Known as Jimbo!

(If I still had my old LEGOs, I would've made an image of a minifigure with a long white beard holding up a cane, and added the caption: "Now get off my lawn you dang kids!" ;))

Whoooo, my old lego box is at my brothers house and we're eagerly waiting for his kids to turn to an age where they don't intent to just eat them anymore :D
