Maybe try, just because of that. You'd be surprised how much it will help you deciding priorities and doing time management and accurate estimates.

It's not like you loose much time if you don't succeed. And what does "succeed" mean in a comp like this anyway?

Succeeding ludum dare means you achieve what you're aiming for IMO.
Having juicy comments and a good rating is always nice, but you shouldn't aim for that in a compo with far more than 1000 entries :P

Why don't we have some kind of Monthly or at least Anual competition in game making? Is it just because there is not enough people? were there something like that in the past?

Yeah we had contests and competitions. Entries usually were few though, sadly.
I'd like to get that going again, but without people it's hard.

Maybe once the re-design is done, we can have a celebratory game jam and invite people to join it/us.

I did some great work in the GPWiki competitions. I learned so much from them. However, they always seemed to happen when I was on guard duty. I was away from home with huge periods of free time. No chance of that these days. :\

Indeed, but at least we would get more people to gain knowledge if we can get more people here. Heck, we might even get big one day with the proper advertisement :d but I am skipping ahead now xD. Tho really this place needs more people :/.

Shame, a lot of those entries don't have downloads anymore. One of the objectives of the competitions was to have source code for people to learn from.

Yeah she is feeling better, but I still missed the dare (and even the extra day for the jam).

I did have an idea though. The theme was "You Only Get One". I was going to make an RTS where you only have one enemy.

So you have miners, builders, attacking units, etc. Fairly basic 2D world (probably top-view or maybe a simple 30 degree isometric). There is only a single enemy character. Words are dynamically generated. Each stage is a progressively harder enemy; the first one can be beaten fairly easily by some low-level attacking units, but to defeat him later on you need many troops and various upgrade to have any chance. He would also be physically larger, to indicate the increased health, shields and firepower of the enemy. The aim of the game is to see how long you can survive (what stage you can get to) before your army cannot take it any more.

I might still make this game anyway, because it would probably be fun.

That sounds like a pretty cool concept. Some scope for Pacific Rim/Godzilla style enemies later in the game.

Original plan was JavaScript because the LD guys like web entries. I haven't done a JS game for a while now, and it would be fun to play with canvas.
