Hey is there anyone familiar with drum and bass music and can fill me in on what the tramen break is (preferably in the form of an mp3 or ogg, though grid/musical notation is fine too). I know all about its history, but I have no idea what it sounds like... and it doesn't seem to exist in any nicely downloadable forms.

I'm just a bit curious, that is all :)

the tramen break is a modified version of the amen break layered with some other less obvious breaks.
It's more compressed and different.

i can't find a copy for you to download, I'll upload my copy tomorrow.

you've heard it before you just didn't know it.

Music theory FTW! :) I'm lacking in that area. I could play that beat if I heard it but wouldn't know what it was called unless someone told me.

That's what is annoying me... every source I find just talks about how it is everywhere, or what is in it, or who made it, but not what it sounds like :)

it's something that's used in thousands of tracks, not just dnb. useful piece of information to know and recognize when you hear it.

As a drummer, I figure it is pretty important to be able to have someone say "I want blah" and to be able to play it. And although I wouldn't have considered myself much of a drum & bass person, I recently listened to a mixtape and really enjoyed it, so I thought I should do a bit of research.

Ironically, I enjoyed it because being drum and bass, there is lots of room left for you to add other stuff, and I had a guitar in my hands at the time, so I liked drum and bass becuase you can play guitar over the top :)

(you can download the mixtape here: http://daniel.holba.ch/blog/?cat=12)

watch the video and you'll learn all about and they play it a million times, first time is about 1:20 into it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac

its importance is
1) its used a EVERYWHERE, once you hear it and become familiar with it you begin to here it in all sorts of songs, on TV, in movies, etc etc.

2) the copyright owners have never asked to be compensated for its sampling! imagine how much money they would receive if all of the thousands of people who used it paid them for it!

That is about the AMEN break, not the Tramen/Firefight break.

They've certainly asked. If you use the right google queries you'll find blog posts by Robert L. Spencer, on of the people involved in The Winstons, complaining that this "is another case of the white man stealing the black man's creativity" (paraphrase from memory). Personally I don't think anyone would have used it if they would've had to pay money. It's not that great to be honest.

they're both rather dull and cliche unless used by someone with LOTS of talent, like Venetian Snares. Otherwise, I much prefer the Funky Drummer break, the Apache break, the Shack-up break or the Impeach break.

Nice... I think the nicest thing is that you posted on a thread that is 3 years old next week :P

Memo to self: must bookmark a necro thread image rather than googling for the same one each time :)
