So after the untimely demise of two Kindle Keyboard devices for no apparent reason, a Kindle Fire I bought around the end of last year is dangerously close to being tossed in the trash.

The Kindle Fire was great at first. My main quibble was that it was very limited (not hardware-wise, but as far as tweakability). I can't even view an HTML page from the internal storage (the file protocol is blocked from the browser, and you cannot download alternative browsers from the Amazon App Store for Kindle). But that's neither here nor there, as the Fire has developed a problem I thought technology had left behind in 2005...

The LCD screen has burn-in artifacts.

Goodnight, folks.

Sorry to hear that Clint.

My Kindle Fire has been a great bit of kit. I had to root and fiddle as I'm not allowed on the Amazon AppStore due to being a UK-ite. Now Go Launcher has replaced the default frontend and a sideloaded Google Market provides all the apps I need.

I was using it today while I pulled my car apart. Having Internet outside saved me from dragging oily footprints through the house to use Google on the main box.

How did you manage to get screen burn? :eek

I know, insane for an LCD screen... but apparently not unheard-of for the Kindle Fire. I've read of at least one other case of such on the XDA forums. But it's the same old stuff -- leave an image too long on the screen, and it leaves a lasting impression. (In my case, I left the screen on at night so I could see the time and listen to music. Should have just left the timed screen shutoff turned on.)

I'd like to root the thing, but it's kind of difficult to get it done on dial-up. I can make trips to the library or order stuff on custom discs, but I'd probably end up spending enough on that to justify just buying a decent tablet (gas is expensive, and custom discs plus shipping them isn't cheap either). I'd be happy if there were a way to just view HTML files from the internal storage (just so I could have a testbed for HTML5 games), but I can't find a way. Was going to sell the Fire, but with the screen issue, that's not likely (at least not for more than the going "spare parts" rate).

Not a big deal really, just annoying. Seems that I, in particular, have an inordinate sum of issues with Amazon devices.
