For those who are not familiar with Ryan Clark (also known to long-time GPWiki'ers as "Lucky"), he is the founder of GPWiki.org, and its predecessor, "Lucky's VB Gaming Site." He is also the founder of Grubby Games, which once hosted GPWiki, and released a number of successful indie games (Professor Fizzwizzle, MyTribe, and others) before he merged the company with Big Fish Games.

Apparently a friend of mine (a Web-development blogger) has something to say on the matter (and I made my retort on his opinion, under the username "theraje") on his blog forum.

The thread: http://forum.camendesign.com/note_of_ad ... developers

EDIT -- And, incidentally... happy birthday to me. My age is now equal to my favorite color bit-depth. 8)

I have had a few messages from Lucky since he handed the site over to me. His account is still active and he did say he might drop in occasionally.

I was never really involved in the Grubby Games side of things, but it does sadden me to think that the site and community may have been crushed by capitalism. Ryan's projects (like GPWiki) always had a friendly atmosphere and he was a top chap. Anyway, this is sounding like an obituary so I'm going to shut up.

It was Lucky's gig, and I'm sure no one forced him to do anything.

Capitalism goes where the money is. Lucky chose to transfer his goods/services to someone else in exchange for capital. Lucky is a smart guy, so I wouldn't presume to assert that he was robbed blind.

No. That is my least favorite color bit-depth. ;)

I think lucky was pretty much aware what he was doing.
It is still saddening though to see one of the few companies that has it's origins in gpwiki go a way like that.

congrats milkbox :)

I agree on both counts. The reason I took such a hard position in defense of what Ryan chose to do is because I respect his decision. I'm not saying I like the way it turned out, but until Lucky emails me a recruitment plea to join an army to invade the corporate headquarters of Big Fish -- I will continue to assume that he is not horribly upset over the results. :)

Um, 256-bit color depth... that sounds like the kind of thing that would trumpet the end of days. :confused

16-bit is better (being that it is more in line with what the human brain is able to handle per "refresh" of the eye), but in computer terms, it leaves much to be desired.

so since 32 bits actually have 8 bits not assigned to actual colors it can only be 24.

Well, congrats in any case :P get some cake and beers and party your ass off :D

Alpha channel! (OK, technically not color, but the format is still referred to as 32-bit.)

But I'm on the wagon! And on a diet the wagon! :doh

I'm sure Lucky knew what he was doing. Bemoaning the disappearance of Grubby Games seems ridiculous given the ephemeral nature of the Internet and computers in general. Most of what we know today will have disappeared in a decade - I think that's just something you have to accept in the electronic realms.

Happy Birthday, Clint!

Only things in this here wagon is me, a computer, and a vivid sexual fetish imagination.

It is. I wondered how long it would take for someone to spot it. ;)

Hope you weren't expecting any of that from me. Earlier today, someone (on another forum) commented that I sound very much like GLaDOS. I had to look it up on Wikipedia before I could figure out whether or not I could agree with him (which, incidentally, I did).
