The first one is really awesome! I think the pose works fine as a sort of "at attention" posture, especially if you exaggerate the spinal curvature when he is in a "stalking" posture (which gives the sense of something worm- or snake-like, which adds to the creep-factor).

I was going at it again:

I won't provide any more info on it as of yet, so take it as a teaser :P

Did a bit of overtime last night. Geez, animations are difficult!
4 hours for this 7 frame walk cycle :o

Image

It turned out quite nice, but it took some serious iterating and suggestions from irc until it got like that.

Looking good, though. :)

Did you ever find a copy of "The Animator's Survival Kit" (IIRC, I recommended it to you at some point?)... it has diagrams that help show you how to formulate walk/run cycles. These gave me huge problems until I got that book, and now I can get pretty decent cycles done in a small fraction of the time as before!

To be honest, i totally forgot about it :D will look it up once more.

But the difficulty in this sprite was not just the animation but getting good poses when you only have a handful of pixels to work with. The sprites boundaries are something like 14x10 or so, so its pretty frickin low res :D

I actually wanted it to look like a fast sprint, but currently it looks like a casual jogging animation, which is fine too :D

It's looking very good, imho.

Agree. It's not a fast sprint, but it definitely has a sense of import -- maybe he's exhausted, but running to get away from some horrible thing chasing him... or, perhaps he is determined to reach the goal ahead of him, in spite of the impossible odds off him getting there. Either way, it has a flavor of "serious" to it.

(TIP: If you want to make it more like a "full-on" run, then at some point in the run cycle (i.e. where the feet are farthest apart), raise the feet up a touch so that it looks like they are both off the ground in that one instant.)

The gait is pretty consistent and purposeful while the swinging arms and the quiff gives it a sense of leisure.

Although what you described pretty much describes his purpose. I have a cliche sidescroller in mind where some villager comes hurried to your house goes like

And off you go :D

The idea is to make a completely linear game, and brag about it, serving some gaming cliches, and maybe some homage's to other game characters (somehow i want him to meet guybrush threepwood :D)
Game time would be around 15 minutes i suppose so it will be a fairly small game. (i.e. one i will manage to actually finish)

Here are a couple more animations i played around with.

Man, doing idle animations is even harder, you move one pixel too many and he looks like he's on speed.

Looks more bouncy, or hoppy. somehow reminds me of Enchantress animation in dota 2 (i'd link a video, but you cannot watch it either way :P)

Will check what you did in detail :D
