Hello!

Me and a friend decided to try making a game for our final project in school.
We have knowledge in C++.
Now, we are planning on making a first person game and my question is:

what would be the best graphics motor to hook up to c++ for a first person game? (not a shooting game)

The game is going to be in 3D.

Thanks!

I've heard that Direct 3D is a good program, is it?

Hi Oscar,

Direct 3D is part of the DirectX API and does provide good 3D rendering capabilities. However, if you're just starting out, you might want to look at using library, wrapper or engine that does alot of the work for you.

The [url=http://content.gpwiki.org/index.php/Game_Engines]Game Engines /url] page on the Wiki should give you some ideas about what is available.

If you're doing this for a school project it would be kinda overkill to create an engine from scratch so i'd suggest, as Codehead did, to use a premade engine. Maybe even consider a toolkit like Unity3D or UDK. Those are mostly complete frameworks that offer a lot. Especially UDK is tailored towards FPS games, so this might be your best bet. Both of those are free to use for uncommercial projects as far as i am aware.
