Great, now I need visual aids to help me remember how I'm going to do things. :confused
At least I'm not completely clueless as to how I'll deal with the battle system anymore.

Beware, huge image.

EDIT: now absolutely exhausted, but the battle system works. yay. Could be written a bit more clean though.

Long time no post.

The game development is now in its final stages.

Current features include:
- Title Screen
- Game Instructions
- Level Selection Screen
- Character Screen
- Battle System
- 10 Different Skills, with each 5 different levels
- 8 Different status effects for different skills and enemy attacks
- 24 Types of enemies
- 8 Bosses
- 2 Chapters, each including 4 different Levels
- Save game implementation

Final to-do's:
- Implement sound
- Credits screen
- Overall game balance

I'd post screens, but I'll just post the final game when it's done. The deadline is approaching. Wish me luck on the finish line.

I'm actually pretty excited to play this thing! You are going very far for your first try (I'm serious, I find it amazing...). Congratulations on your success! ;)

Well done, DrDima. As Pieman says, it's quite an accomplishment. :thumbs

Indeed. Starting is the easy bit, finishing is something I rarely manage. Keep it up. :thumbs

Sounds awesome! Can't wait to see it.

The game is finished, at least as finished as it's ever going to be.

My question is, what's the best way to let other people download it apart from hosting the game file on a personal web page?

Step 1: Put it in a zip file and upload it.
Step 2: E-mail your friends the uploaded file's URL!
Step 3: Link us to your game and submit it here: viewforum.php?f=9
Step 4: Search for homemade game publication websites and showcases around on the internet. (I don't know of many, to be honest, but that's just me). Follow their submission instructions. :lol

As you may figure, I'm not very experienced in distribution, but my advice is to just get started telling the world where ever you can. A personal web page will be excellent as a "home-base" for your game. Look for feedback, and if you find that people are interested enough in the game, maybe you can try to reward this little community of yours and give them a sequel. Take it as far as you want. If it deems necessary and people really are that interested in your game, you can even setup a web forum if it seems people are actually that interested to talk about your game (probably unlikely though).

Haha, this is corny...

GOOD JOB!

Thanks, but actually I'm not looking to popularize it, just looking for a sensible upload option.

I might submit a game to indie game magazine in the future, but that's for a later project.

Dropbox is pretty simple and allows you to give out a public download link. Otherwise, I've used http://www.mediafire.com/ a few times.

I went with mediafire. Thanks for the tip.

Here it is then. The game is kind of monotonous, but I learned a lot from making it.
Now it's time for exams, but I'll think about what kind of project I want to do next.

I didn't want to sound like a spammer... but... MediaFire? Seriously?

For some reason the game errored as soon as I ran it. Does it need some libraries installed?

What's wrong with Mediafire? They have a simple interface and don't give me a countdown unlike other download sites I've come across.

No, it doesn't. I tried it on someone else's laptop yesterday and it worked.
I know it works on Windows7 and Vista.

I get the title screen, then some random key presses got me to a chapter 1 and char select screen, but I can't work out the controls or progress beyond that.

When you've spent a good while working on a game, it's easy to forget that the end user is thrown in at the deep end and doesn't know how things work at all. You can address this by providing some guidance in the readme, or even add an in game to guide the newbie through the first steps (most people won't read the notes, they just dive right in).

I know seeing 'Press Start to continue' at the start of a game seems like stating the obvious, but it's better to provide too much guidance than too little. I saw the 'C' and 'X' prompts in game, but they just seemed to shift me back and forth between the start screens.

What I did see looked good and seemed to run OK, but I couldn't move on to the game itself to provide any more feedback.

ATI Radeon HD 4300

Yeah it's hard to take a step back when you're right in the middle of it.

At the title screen use the arrow keys to move to instructions, then press x to enter. The rest should be explained there.
Basically the movement scheme is-> arrow keys to move, x to select.

Ah, got it. 8)

Pretty cool for a first attempt, runs fine for me. IMO, the balancing needs a tweak to maintain player interest. However, it's an impressive first game. Well done.

Thanks again to all the gpwiki people.
As mentioned, I'll be focusing on exams until februari the second. But after that I'll be gearing up for my next project.
I'll give myself until the end of June for that one. Maybe something bigger, better and more polished.
Take care and see you soon.

Good luck! What are your ideas? I would actually be interested in discussing generic game design ideas... would you mind some community brain storming? :D
