I think 3d art sucks.

Thats about it. I wouldnt make a 3d game, i dont like how they look or feel.

I will still play 3d games, but i wouldnt make a 3d one myself.

This basic character frame i have drawn right now, to me looks 500 times better then anything 3d.

Mainly Because pixel art just has a more classic feel too it. A Good Feel.

3d art has a bad / evil feeling to it.

Like its a sin or something. Its cheap and lazy.... Just my personal feelings :)

I understand the Moon's position ... I can't think in 3 dimensions either. ;)

You should see me try to play basketball. :lol

Quickly put Max in a smaller version. Ofcourse this guy has way more detail than your one, but does it look bad? I think it's pretty good :)

yah sticking a 3d character into a non-3d world looks very bad.

Yeah, but maybe applying some cel shading would help. But as it stands, I find the 'low-fi pixely' guy more pleasing than the 3d bipedeal dog thing. Uncanny valley, anyone?

Well its not even that. I can think very well in 3d dimensions, i just dont feel 3d art brings as much depth into the game world as 2d art can.

Im not talking about width height and 'Depth' eaither hehe....

3d art is pretty hard to make look good (Gears of War/Crysis good anyway). Becuase it is in 3 dimensions we expect realism.

2d art just has to look consistent to look good (even if it is consistently low detail). And it is significantly easier to make 2d art consistent looking. Even the old SNES RPGs stilll look good today (aside from the flickering graphics)

I wipped this up for my children game, I thought it was pretty nice ;).

Like I said, this was just a simple test - but I cannot be bothered right now to make another person just with some boxes :).

I don't think prerendered sprites look good at all. It's not because it looks weird per se, just that 3D models tend to take away a little bit of the "organic" look of a character. Cel-shading a model then making it a sprite is a bit better though. I just think 3D models that have been turned to 2D sprites don't have as much of a natural feel.

Then again, that's the arteest in me speaking. Most people might not know the difference or care either way.

I know what you mean. And feel free to take it with a grain of salt... It's easy for me to criticize when I don't have any work of my own to show. :O

anyone ever played the Yoshi game on the N64? It was essentially 3D yoshi's on a 2D background and it still looked pretty good IIRC.

Have you seen any of the Age of ... anything ... titles? Those 3D-rendered 2D models look awesome, imo.

And, yes, Moon ... I was just joking. You and I have different reasons for liking 2D games. Among other things. ;)

Nope, haven't really played many recent retail games for the PC. The last PC game I remember buying is Quake 3. Retail PC games and I aren't on speaking terms at the moment. :P

Shows you how long it's been since I've been heavy into PC gaming. :O

The Commander Keen era is more what I'm most familiar with. :P

I think the age of empires models as 2d sprites work really well because of the scale (ie they're rendered really small.) But they're kindof psuedo-realistic looking. I'm more into 2d at the moment and I think 2d has a sort of character than 3d can't replicate well.

The graphics in the marioDS game are excellent. Where they 3D rendered?

I'm not into Mario games, but if this is the one:

Then I think it is rendered :).
