Hi,

Sprites are just (small) images, so saving/loading sprites works exactly the same as saving/loading normal images as BMP.

How to do that depends on what library you use (assuming you use a library). Look at Allegro or SDL for example. Such libraries usually come with a function to load or save an image (=sprite) out of the box. They usually also have tutorials to get you started.

The question about "how are sprites working" is difficult to answer, as I don't understand what you mean.
Sprites are just images, nothing more. They don't work at all by themselves as far as I know.

Perhaps you could give us some context? What game are you making, what are you trying to achieve, and how do sprites play a role in it?
(and perhaps what do you think they (should) do?)
