But I don't want the game to go from nice peacful music to combat music constantly. It gets annoying! Remember pokemon?

Hey, pokemon rocks :P

Actually, we could implement a kind of system where the intensity of the music depends on your current status in relation to enemies:

(using metal as an example)

-No enemies know you're there
Bass, some rhythm buitar, light drums

-Enemies are on alert, but don't see you directly
Heavier Bass, rhythm guitar, second guitar, medium drums

-Enemies know you're there, where you are, and want you dead
Heavy bass, rhythm guitar, second rhythm guitar, lead guitar (screaming solo), heavy drums

This guy has responded, he said he will be able to do custom tracks. I'm working out the exact details as we speak. At the moment he said:

On the subject of music, I figure that every location will have a couple of ambient tracks and a couple of combat tracks, and that should be sufficient.

All though, perhaps we don't need separate combat tracks. Diablo and Diablo 2 didn't have separate combat tracks and therefore managed to keep a consistant mood.

I like pokemion too, but that was an annoying part.

Just make sure there is a smooth transaction from peaceful to fighting.

Will we have a day/night cycle, and weather, and will we have separate music for day/night and different weather kinds? I say perhaps yes to the different music for day/night, weather matters less.

I think we should reach a decision about the music soon.

Also, sound effects-wise, we should have several kinds.
1) looping ambient sounds - attached to locations and objects, like wind blowing through a cave and stuff
2) 1-hit ambient sounds - attached to a locations and objects, with a configureably random distance to add to the location. Things like random twigs breaking and a crow cawing in the distance
4) event sounds - like a guy getting shot

I can help with making sounds and finding royalty free free ones.

Machaira seems to have decided in favor of having Day/Night music and Ambient/Combat music on IRC. I wouldn't say it's oked 100% though until he posts or wikifies it.

You could have put it in the wiki. ;) :lol

But yeah, I'd like to see some things happen during both the day and night and some music to add to the atmosphere in certain situations would be cool. That doesn't mean there needs to be music 24/7 though. :)

Uhhh, why not? The only game I can think of that didn't have music 24/7 was Half-Life.

What file format will we use? I would say probably OGG or MP3, but better OGG.

Ogg is fine.

Also, just because "every other game did it", doesn't mean we have to. There might be times where we don't want music to change the mood and atmosphere.

I can't forsee any possible situation at ALL where this would be good.

Because sometimes a lack of music can have more impact than music. Doom 3 uses a lot of ambience (not the genre) to build atmosphere like this. Say, if the player character walks into what remains of a YMCA-esque family center, with words like 'Help' and 'Succumb' written in blood on the walls. Can you think of any kind of music that suits that?

Quiet creepy ambient non-intrusive music like that which androne makes? Besides, Doom 3 is not a very good example of a scary game that we wish to follow, IMHO.

ambient noises != Androne's music (unless it's from a radio playing) :) ;)
