very cool, the transitions look nice, as long as it's the the same shape. otherwise it looks weird. Maybe fade out-then in?
Otherwise i think it would be good enough to just change them on site changes.

OR if you wanna go overboard. on a site change, fade the page and logo out(not the header tho), load the next page in the background, and fade both in again :P

We could do crossfades on page transitions, but stuff like that gets old very quickly and after the initial WOW it quickly becomes annoying.

I did notice that the swap between different shaped logos doesn't flow as nicely, but I've got it as good as I can. I don't think it'll be a problem once the delay goes up to 15 or 30 seconds between changes. Either way, it's easy to remove the transition from the page if we don't want to use it.

Quiet night tonight. Did a bit on the page, added a min-width to stop it falling apart on resize and moved the logoText style into the CSS file.

Yeah I'm with Codehead, full page transitions would be VERY annoying.

I'm not even sure about the logo animation; it might get quite distracting... Cool, but distracting.

That should not be a problem if we set the delay to about a minute right?

I took a look at the billing for the site last night, I'm due to renew this server on the 1st Jan. I've been trying to move to Digital Ocean since May and I really should push to get it sorted out.

So, I'm going to concentrate on moving the site for the remainder of the month. I'll incorporate any changes we have finalised as I go (new smilies, improved header, fixed width forum) but the priority will be the move rather than features.

We can continue with the update, but big changes will have to wait until the move is complete.

On the plus side, I'm going to set up a dev subdomain so we can try out new stuff.

Do you want the HTML/CSS of my new home page?

If you provide the .php of the current home page, I'll even migrate your forum/wiki scraping if you'd like...?

That'd be cool Josh. Can you zip it up and upload somewhere? I can wire up the backend, should be a quick job.

I got the Wiki header sorted tonight. So getting there.

I'll send it through tonight. Just did some work in making it responsive. I'll through it through our MSIE testsuite as well...

Here you go:
http://thejosh.info/gpwiki/home_v3.zip

It's got an issue with IE8 and the columns not always being the correct height, but that doesn't actually break the design, it just looks a little odd.

Fully responsive for mobile users too.

Thanks. 8) I will take a look tomorrow, I'll be driving around meetings today and staying away from home tonight.

Spent the weekend fighting with MediaWiki templates and PHP oddness. Actually lost ground, but hopefully the work I put in will help keep everything else unified.

I'm sitting here with glee and anticipation for the overhaul :spin
I haven't had much time to get busy with colors and stuff, but it's still in my schedule, so no worries :P

OK, back home and a bit hung over from Xmas drinks. Grabbed your zip Josh, thank you. Will look at that tomorrow.

The Wiki header is done (again!) but there are a few problems with the wiki itself that need to be sorted.

zOMG! :eek MediaWiki is NEEDY. Spent to whole night fighting issues. :(

However, I've sorted pretty URLS, LaTeX rendering, a crazy image indexing issue, broken plugins and the D3D book skin. I think I can put MW to bed now and finish up the rest of the site.

I have a mediawiki setup on my server, but i never really did much with it in terms of customization. Kinda glad i didn't. :P

Awesome that you're putting so much effort into it. :yeah

Currently looking through a bunch of preset skins on phpbb to see whats possible and what we could base ours on. (nevermind the color schemes)

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/alpha/demo/
flat colors, very clean, structured and sober

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/pro_mod/demo/
straight edges, pretty much like the default

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/khaki/demo/
rounded edges, bit more confined

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styl ... ntom/demo/
very bubbly and playful, lots of borders but also looks quite busy

Personally i prefer the flat one, but i'm generally biased towards simple designs.

btw, are we using phpbb3?

On another note, people i've been talking to about forum customization/design were wondering why we're not using simple machines, it apparently is faster, safer, and easier to customize aswell.
There is a converter available so we could import our posts and probably userbase into it.
There's also a huge bunch of custom themes and modifications, including a syntax highlighter that supports a whole bunch of languages.
Maybe it's worth looking into?

PS:
Image
Also here's the css if someone wants to modify it: http://codepaste.net/mop7hi

I cannot manage to find the navigation bar background color though. it is ECECEC but if i replace all occurances of that color it still doesnt change, where it is?!?!?! :x

I like the Alpha theme. Obviously the colors need work, but I like the layout.

I've looked at SMF, the big stopper is Mediawiki integration. There is an SSO extension but it isn't being maintained and some of the errors people are posting look very familiar after last night's struggles.

I'll concentrate on migrating to the new host then we can re-assess or platforms.

What parts of the forum need to be integrated into the wiki i wonder? I thought they just exist alongside eachother

I've set up and tested a single sign on extension for MediaWiki that uses the forum session cookie to authenticate users on the Wiki. It means that if you have a forum account, you'll automatically be signed into the wiki when you visit. I hope this will allow us to open up the Wiki again without the problem of spammers.

It isn't working here, but will be turned on once were over to the new server.

The same extension is available for SMF, but seems broken through lack of updates.

Anyway....

Merged Josh's front page to the new header and wired up the DB feeds at the new server tonight! http://www.nullregister.com :yeah Thanks for your efforts Josh.

IoTD has been transferred too, but needs work after the move to redesign and add some PHP magic to the pages. I want to move the content into the DB.

I think I just need to finish up the forum tweaks and we're good to go.
