Books and the Internet are a great source of information of programing semantics and practical examples, but the rule of thumb always goes "Experiment with that you learned". So you can't just hope to read a long book and end up being an expert in programing (I am not implying that you are going to do this). Learning programming needs your attention and to a certain degree it is a commitment (cause it's impractical to learn how to program and then live a life as a football player). So try it out, and if you really enjoy it then continue getting better!
